1st Day - off to St. George, Utah

Of course the interesting part of this trip is the city of St. George and it's surroundings.  We got there early enough to do a bit of exploring.  Went to Pioneer Park with it's desert Garden displays, slot canyons (man created and God created) and did a little hiking there.  Drive past the Mormon Church which was under extensive repairs or restorations.  Also cruised past Dixie State University which had some very interesting architecture - especially it's aquatic center the (Human Performance Center) with the enclosed swimming pool.  For the evening we ate dinner at "George's at the Corner" - which has been there since the early history of St. George.  Great Food.

Okay, okay...this one is a sculpture...well done though

Yucca display

Ever lovin' jumping cholla....("Teddy Bear" Cholla - way to sucker you into touching this plant)

Purple Prickly Pear

Barrel Cactus Display

Slot Canyon....man made

Slot Canyon - God made - mostly used His wind power.

And finally - Dinner at Georges at the Corner.  Which we would highly recommend.

George's Corner Restaurant History

George Pace owned and operated the Big Hand Café, which stood on this same corner, during the 1930’s and 40’s.

The Big Hand Café was the center of town, the gathering spot, the place where news was shared.

It quickly became a St. George icon and a stopping place for tourists as they traveled through Southern Utah. The Greyhound bus would make its one stop in town at the Big Hand and each time it pulled in the waitresses would holler “bus in”, and they would get ready to serve the hungry travelers. Best remembered for its sign of a big hand outlined with blinking lights pointing to the front door and the lit up words “Especially Good Food”.

It was easy to find - it was located at the only stop light in town. It was one of the first buildings to be “air cooled”, which was much desired in the hot summers of Southern Utah.
